M-R is a new bottling from Haut-Segottes in Saint Emilion. The M-Ra nod to the longstanding partnership between the Meunier and Rosenthal familiescomes from a recently acquired 1.5-hectare parcel of sandy clay-limestone in the nearby commune of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, planted to a very similar blend as the classic Haut-Segottes: 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot. Instead of folding it into the flagship Saint-Emiliona viable option given the vineyards location within appellation confinesCamille and Danielle decided to produce something more playful and youthfully accessible to complement their existing range. Thus, M-R underwent a straightforward fermentation and aging in stainless steel, and is labeled simply as a Vin de France.
Despite its gentler extraction and its overall breezier personality, M-R still offers a depth of fruit and a mineral snap that underline its origin in a great terroir. Aromas are lifted and muskily floral, underpinned by black, plummy fruit and shot through with a savory streak. The palate echoes the luscious black fruit, with finely rendered but present tannins which impart notable freshness on the long and graceful finish. M-Ran exclusive bottling for the US marketis a charming iteration of the Haut-Segottes house style.
