The idea behind Gorro is very simple, to look for older vineyards in Vinho Verde and craft the wines in the simplest, most transparent way to convey the grape, climate, and soil. The term Gorro refers to the ubiquitous flat cap worn by old farmers around the world, but it is a particularly pertinent name in Portugal, as more than any other country in western Europe, it is still old farmers and older people who tend to the vines and are the bedrock of the wine industry. The labels of the bottles are adorned with beautifully rendered, hand drawn faces of these older farmers.
The Gorro Loureiro comes from two 40~ year old vineyards just a few kilometers from the Atlantic ocean. One vineyard right on the Lima river is on schist soil, another at a slightly higher elevation is on granite. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel and spends about 9 months on the lees.
