I begin every Slopey shift the same way: by going through the store to see what new wines have appeared since I was last in the shop. A couple weeks ago, I was surprised and delighted to discover a new red Bordeaux making its debut in, of all places, the Cheap & Tasty section. I love what the Brits call Claret, but at $13.99 could it possibly be any good? I was having mushroom risotto for dinner the next night and I needed a bottle to go with it; may as well give it a whirl. I’m glad I did. Les Gravieres de Brandille Bordeaux Supérieure 2020 is a Merlot-driven blend with earthy notes that really enhanced the umami quality of the mushrooms. It’s savory and herbal with notes of plums and currants. A winner! As a Slopey customer prior to being an employee, I’ve long appreciated the store’s commitment to stocking tasty wines at every price point, and the care the buying team puts into selecting every wine we carry. Just saying - don’t sleep on Cheap & Tasty!
