Luigi Oddero Barolo "Convento" 2016

$37.99
The Barolo Convento is a one-time release from the Luigi Oddero winery. They usually can sell some of their fruit, leaving the very best for their estate wines, but 2016 proved to be an exceptional vintage with really high-quality fruit across their properties, and so cellarmaster Francesco Verzio (formerly of Bruno Giacosa) suggested they do a second bottling of Barolo, calleing it "Convento" in a nod to the medieval convent nearby. Convento was given the same treatment as their Barolo Tradizionale. Native yeast fermentation in tanks, a 25 day maceration and 2 years of aging in large oak botti. It has all the classic aromatics of their Tradizionale, but is a bit softer in tannins and meant to enjoy younger than its siblings. Hard to say whether we'll see this wine again!
